October 2026 Meeting
The October 2026 meeting of LRUG will be on Monday the 12th of October, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm (meeting starts at 6:30pm). Most of us don’t think of our Rails apps as distributed systems, but the moment your code makes an HTTP call, publishes a Kafka event, or reads from a cache, that’s exactly what you’re running. Networks fail, messages arrive late or twice, and cached data quietly goes stale. Even the comfort of a single database transaction can become a liability as a system grows. Eventual consistency, often treated as a compromise to be avoided, can instead be one of the most useful tools you have for keeping those systems predictable.
In this talk, we’ll look at how we’ve been using eventual consistency inside a monolith to decouple product domains from payment processing, with the aim of keeping payments reliable and high-throughput. We’ll explore handling network issues, when it can make sense to break up ACID transactions in favour of eventual consistency, and how the same idea can be applied at different levels of abstraction in a codebase. Along the way, we’ll talk through some patterns you can take back to your own applications, whether you’re working in a growing monolith or already dealing with the realities of distributed state.
Afterwards
When the talks come to an end we’ll decamp to a local pub for some food, some drinks and some chat with your fellow attendees.
Of course, even though this is the socialising part and seems more informal, please remember that still we consider it to be a part of the meeting and covered by our code of conduct.
